Heiniger Xtra (712-670)

The Heiniger Xtra is a corded sheep shearing machine for livestock handlers who need a dedicated comb-and-cutter handpiece. This 712-670 version is the manufacturer's 120 V US configuration. Its standard shearing head is intended for sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas and other camelids; clipping cattle or horses requires the appropriate alternative head, available separately.

A 320-watt motor drives the cutting mechanism at 2,400 double strokes per minute. The Xtra's floating fork distributes pressure across the comb and cutter, allowing the blades to work with less contact pressure. That design makes correct tension adjustment especially important: excessive tightening is unnecessary, and the manual explains how to establish and maintain the proper setting. A thermal overload switch is built into the machine.

The handpiece measures 350 mm long. Heiniger lists a shearing head and blade pair, special screwdriver, lubricating oil, cleaning brush, operating instructions and transport/storage case as the standard equipment. These items cover the basic setup and routine care of the shearing system.

Before and during shearing, keep the blades and moving head components lubricated as directed in the manual. Brush out accumulated material and maintain a clean air filter. Blade condition, alignment and tension should be checked whenever cutting quality changes, with sharpening entrusted to a qualified workshop.
